The title for this chapter sums up the conversation very
nicely: Materiality, Design, and Creativity. All three are critical involved
and related in the field of Industrial Design. The chapter talks about how
materials (from a material library) can offer inspiration and inform a design.
It also made interesting points on how culture and time can play a significant part
in the design process. The most interesting part of the chapter for me was the
discussion of the design process itself. It covered the processes involved as
well such as ideation, iteration, and design details. Developing organizing a design
process is critical to success at problem solving. It doesn’t have to be linear
process and your first idea is most likely not the best. It requires iteration
and creativity. Good Design is found somewhere in the
amorphous mixture that goes on between initial ideas, inspiration, materials
and other influences. Chapter 3 concludes and ties together its main points
with a case look at IDEO. They are truly
a unique design consultant with their approach to social interaction, culture, combination
of materials and design.
